Jr ADANACS DRAFT IN BACK YARD FOR ‘09
The Coquitlam Jr Adanacs drafted their future crop of Jr players on Sun Feb 8th in Pt. Coquitlam. The following players are expected to play and compete for spots on the Jr A club in 2011 or sooner. “This was a deep and talented draft year for midgets”, comment GM Ken Wood. “The 1992 graduating class is expected to provided to all of the Jr A teams a number of talented ball players that I think we will see be very successful not only in our league but longer into WLA careers”. Coquitlam knew well what it want to do in player selection and had been provide very good and solid information of Director of Scouting Frank Scigliano. “Frank made my job so easy, he had so much analysis on each of the top 50 players and as we saw the draft unfold players were taken pretty much right were Frank had them listed, I’d say close to 85% so when you see that unfold you know he took his job seriously”.
“Even though it was a deep talented draft it was not easy”. GM Wood. “It’s like who do you pick, how will they fit”. To put itself into a position to select what the Jr A’s wanted and needed, the club made trades through out 2008 to place itself with the 2nd pick overall and then the 1st and 2nd picks in the second round. Coquitlam finished 1st overall in league play last year, relegating its draft order as last in each round. “We knew what we had to do, we had to part with some very talented players in their own right and move some previous drafted players rights, but at the end of the day, we did what was right for the teams future but also for what was right for the players we moved, they will get to play Jr A and that is what it is all about”, said Wood. “We did not get everything we targeted, I could not complete a last minute trade and we lost a player just before our turn to pick. Nothing is perfect but we’ll try and do other business with other clubs. All in all pretty pleased with how we drafted.”
With Coquitlam having 5 picks in the first 3 rounds they took Eddie Patron 1st overall right out of Port Moody then dipped back down the road again to select Mike Howren and Cory Cop both in the second round. Squeezed in between was Tyler Lewthwaite from Ridge Meadows rounding out the trifecta of 2nd round picks. “I spoke with Tyler weeks before the draft, he made it clear that if drafted he would play here. We like Tyler a lot so did not hesitate to take him, even though many thought he would go to New West. We are very pleased to draft him and look forward to him playing in Coquitlam”.
